Event Costs & Fees

Some OY Events are bundled with area events such as Otago Champs & South Island Champs and may not attract the 50% discount.

Electronic timing, Sport ident "chips" or "sticks"

Most modern orienteering uses electronic timing, and competitors carry on their hands a "stick" or "chip". You insert this stick into a box at each control / checkpoint.

Regular orienteers purchase their own stick.  The club has some to purchase.  You can trade in some older models for newer ones.  We use the older model ones as our "hire" sticks.

It costs $3 per course to hire one from the Club. You return it to the caravan after you have downloaded your course at the finish; a step you must do, firstly so you know how long you took and if you did the course correctly, and secondly so we know you are not still out there, lost!  If you forget to hand the stick back in, or you lose one, there is a $50 replacement charge.

For high level events, or mountain bike orienteering, there is contactless (Sport Ident "Air") timing.  These events use more expensive chips called SIAC's (picture at left, below).  These cost $5 per event to hire.  If you forget to hand these back in, or you lose it, there is a $150 replacement charge.

Championship and Special Events fees are set separately.

A Family is up to two Seniors living at the same address and any number of Juniors at the same address who look to one of the Seniors as a parent.

Payments

Payment via direct credit into the club Bank Account is appreciated for Event Fees, as we only have limited cash at events.

Compasses

As a beginner, you don't need a compass for the simplest courses.  But as you improve and do more technical courses, you will need to develop some skills with a compass.  Any experienced Club members are happy to discuss compass technique, or let you know what options there are.

A good basic starter "baseplate" compassare the Silva Field or Ranger compasses, or the Suunto A10 or A30 compasses. You can use these for tramping and other navigation activities, too.

Some orienteers choose to use "thumbcompasses". They can help you take bearings more frequently, but are vulnerable to breaking if you fall onto your arm/hand.  The club has some simple ones to hire for $3 per course.  If you lose or break it, or forget to hand it in, there is a $25 replacement charge.

Note there are different compasses for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Older orienteers often attach magnifiers to compasses to help see the detail more clearly.
